Have you ever thought about what it’s like to be part of something that transcends your own experiences? To stand in a space filled with warmth, kindness, and a spirit of giving? That’s exactly what I imagine when I think about volunteering at Free Store 15104 in Braddock, Pennsylvania. Founded by Gisele Fetterman, this special place is much more than a store—it's a profound example of how coming together as a community can create incredible strength and resilience.

Who is Gisele Fetterman?

Gisele Fetterman is a force to be reckoned with. A passionate advocate for access, equity, and kindness, she’s known for her warm hugs and even warmer heart. As the founder of Free Store 15104, co-founder of 412 Food Rescue, and For Good PGH, Gisele has built her life around the idea of giving back and lifting others. She’s been featured on major platforms like CNN, NPR, and the TODAY Show, but at the heart of it all, she’s a mother, a community leader, and a champion for those who need a little extra support.

What is Free Store 15104?

Free Store 15104 started as a project for the Braddock community but has grown into something so much more. Housed in a recycled shipping container that once traveled the seas, the store now serves nearly 1,600 clients each month, distributing surplus and donated goods to those in need. The store has even inspired six other locations and helped launch 412 Food Rescue, a movement dedicated to ending hunger by rescuing perfectly good food that would otherwise go to waste.

At Free Store 15104, the belief is simple yet powerful: we have enough resources in our communities to ensure that no one goes without. Whether it’s clothing, food, or basic household items, Free Store 15104 makes sure these essentials reach the hands of those who need them most—completely free of charge.

Core Beliefs: Why Free Store Matters

What makes Free Store 15104 so unique isn’t just the service it provides, but the philosophy that drives it. This store is built on four core beliefs:

  1. Strong communities are built on relationships based on mutual aid and cooperation.

  2. Recycling and reuse counteract excessive waste and consumption.

  3. We can eradicate food and clothing insecurity with the resources already available in our community.

  4. The distribution of free items can be a catalyst for change.

These guiding principles reflect the deep love and care that go into every interaction at Free Store 15104, where no one is judged, and everyone is embraced with dignity and respect.

Why Volunteer?

There’s something incredibly special about the work happening at Free Store 15104. It’s not just about redistributing goods; it’s about fostering a spirit of community. Each time you volunteer, you’re part of a story of love and kindness, a story that’s rebuilding the heart of Braddock. This once-thriving industrial town has lost 90% of its population, but the spirit of the people who remain is unbreakable. And the Free Store plays a critical role in keeping that spirit alive.

When you volunteer, you’re not just filling bags with clothing or checking out shoppers. You’re connecting with people—fellow volunteers and clients alike. You’re reminding them that they matter, that their needs are seen and met with dignity. And in doing so, you’ll likely find that your own heart is filled in ways you didn’t expect.

How Can You Help?

Every Saturday, Free Store 15104 opens its doors to serve up to 100 families in just a few short hours. The need is immense, and the work is nonstop. That’s where volunteers come in. Whether you’re monitoring the door to ensure a safe number of shoppers, assisting with check-out, or helping someone find the perfect size, every task is important. Volunteers are needed from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with the store open to the public from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Your time and energy could make a world of difference. Whether you can give one Saturday or many, every bit of help is valuable. And trust me—once you experience the warmth of Free Store 15104, you’ll want to keep coming back.

Let’s Rebuild Braddock—Together

As we face challenges in our world, the work of places like Free Store 15104 becomes more vital than ever. It’s a reminder that in times of difficulty, communities can come together to care for each other in profound ways.
